Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, fresh off his OTT debut with Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, is gearing up for his next major project, Love And War. This highly anticipated film will feature a stellar cast, including Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, and Vicky Kaushal.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali Calls Love And War A ‘Contemporary’ Film
In a recent interview with Variety, Bhansali provided some insights into the storyline, which centres around a love triangle. This will be Bhansali’s return to the romance genre after a considerable time. He described the film as a “slightly contemporary work,” in contrast to his previous historical projects known for their grand visuals and intricate detailing.
“It’s a new language, milieu, and ambience for me,” Bhansali said, expressing his excitement for exploring a different era with new characters and situations. He emphasised the importance of this film in inspiring him to create something fresh and innovative.
SLB Is Eager To See How Alia, Ranbir & Vicky’s Chemistry Works For Love And War
Discussing the casting of Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, and Vicky Kaushal, Bhansali remarked, “It’s nice to work with this wonderful cast of Ranbir, Vicky, and Alia. It’ll be nice to see how their chemistry works.” He noted that the film features a “triangular love story,” a theme not often seen in recent Hindi cinema. Bhansali is eager to see how the unique dynamics between the lead actors unfold on screen.
The project has been generating significant buzz since it was first reported by Pinkvilla that Bhansali was in talks with Bhatt, Kapoor, and Kaushal.
A source close to the development revealed, “Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been very keen to take a step back from the period dramas with an intense tone. He has been looking to make a love story, and this subject has been at the back of his mind for a while now. SLB feels this is the best time to make a love story and is very excited to tap this genre.”
About Love And War & Ranbir, Alia, Vicky’s Work Front
Adding to the excitement, Love & War will be set against the backdrop of war, serving as an homage to the 1964 classic Sangam, directed by Raj Kapoor. This marks the reunion of Alia Bhatt with Bhansali after their successful collaboration in Gangubai Kathiawadi in 2022.
Ranbir Kapoor will work with Bhansali for the first time since his debut in Saawariya. For Vicky Kaushal, this will be his first project with the acclaimed director.
Currently, Alia Bhatt is preparing for her role in the YRF Spy Universe film, while Ranbir Kapoor is busy with Ramayana. Vicky Kaushal has just wrapped up shooting for Chhaava and is anticipating the release of Bad Newz. The production of Love & War is expected to begin towards the end of this year and might extend until June 2025.
The film was officially announced on 24 January 2024, with a title card bearing the signatures of the main trio. Love & War is slated for a festive theatrical release on Christmas 2025.
