Devara Star Saif Ali Khan REACTS To Karan Johar’s Actors Demanding Exorbitant Fees Statement: ‘I’m Sure He Is Right, But…’
Actor Saif Ali Khan has shared his thoughts on Karan Johar’s recent comments about actors demanding high fees in the film industry. In an interview with India Today, Saif acknowledged Karan’s concerns but added his perspective on the situation.
Karan Johar had made headlines when he stated that actors often ask for exorbitant fees without the guarantee of a hit film. He expressed his frustration with stars who expect to be paid amounts equal to a film’s entire budget, questioning their right to make such demands.
“Every star asked me for the same money that the budget was for. I was like, ‘How can I pay you? When the budget is Rs 40 crore, you’re asking for Rs 40 crore? Are you guaranteeing the film will do Rs 120 crore? There’s no guarantee, right?’” Karan explained during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India.
Here’s What Saif Ali Khan Said
In response, Saif remarked, “He wants to cut pay cheques. I think I should have my own union on that. I am sure he is right, but it makes me a little nervous when we hear about cutting pay cheques. No cutting pay cheques.”
He elaborated on the economics of the Hindi film industry, noting that when a star is approached for a film, they sometimes set their prices based on their perceived value. “If you want me, that’s what it is going to cost. And people pay it. If people pay it, then sometimes the economics do get skewed,” Saif said.
Saif also highlighted that the industry operates as a business. “Indians are businessmen. So the film industry is primarily a business kind of financial centre in itself and people take shots,” he noted.
He added a touch of humour, saying that Karan Johar is well-versed in these matters. “But Karan Johar knows best. I’m just joking,” he said.
Saif Explains What Karan Johar Actually Talked About
Moreover, Saif pointed out that the issue at hand is not just about the fees actors charge but also about their ability to deliver at the box office. “What he (Karan) is talking about is people charging astronomical money and then not delivering, which can’t last. We don’t charge that much; we are recession-proof,” Saif stated.
Karan Johar had earlier mentioned that only a handful of actors are viable in the industry, and many of them are asking for unreasonable fees. “There are about 10 viable actors in Hindi cinema, and they are all asking for the sun, moon, and earth. So, you pay them; then you pay for the film, and then the marketing expenditure comes. And then your film doesn’t do the numbers,” he explained.
Talking about their work front, Saif Ki Khan is currently appearing in his latest release Devara Part 1. On the other hand, Karan Johar is set to make his web series debut after years of directing films for the big screen.
