Emergency Update: CBFC Says Kangana Ranaut’s Film Can Be Certified After Suggested Cuts; Next Hearing At Bombay HC On Sep 30
Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Emergency is in a precarious position as it awaits certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
On September 26, the CBFC informed the Bombay High Court that the film could receive its certification if it implements specific cuts recommended by its revising committee.
Originally set for a September 6 release, Emergency has faced delays due to ongoing issues with the censor board regarding its certification.
Kangana Ranaut Feels CBFC Deliberately Delayed The Film’s Certification
Kangana Ranaut, who not only stars in the film but also directed and co-produced it, has been vocal about her frustrations. She alleges that the CBFC is deliberately stalling the certification process to hinder the film’s release.
The film is based on former former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and has stirred controversy. Some Sikh organisations, notably the Shiromani Akali Dal, claim the film misrepresents their community and distorts historical events.
The Bombay High Court, presided over by Justices B P Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla, expressed frustration with the CBFC’s slow response.
Last week, the court urged the board to take decisive action, stating that further delays could infringe upon freedom of speech and expression. They set a deadline for the CBFC to reach a decision by September 25.
CBFC Says Emergency Will Be Certified After The Suggested Suggested Are Done
When questioned by the court on September 26 about the status of Emergency, CBFC counsel Abhinav Chandrachud confirmed that the revising committee had completed its review.
“The committee has suggested some cuts before the certificate can be issued and the movie can be released,” he stated.
Senior counsel Sharan Jagtiani, representing Zee Entertainment Enterprises—the co-producer of Emergency—requested additional time to consider whether to accept the suggested cuts.
The controversy surrounding Emergency intensified when Zee Entertainment filed a plea with the Bombay High Court, urging the CBFC to issue the certificate.
They claimed the certification was complete but being unjustly withheld, hinting at political interference as a potential cause. The production house pointed to the upcoming elections in Haryana as a possible reason for the delay.
However, the court questioned this assertion, particularly given Ranaut’s affiliation as a BJP MP, making the political motivations unclear.
Next Hearing On The Matter On September 30
The matter is not over yet. The court has scheduled a follow-up hearing for September 30, allowing Zee Entertainment time to review the CBFC’s proposed cuts.
Whether Emergency will proceed to release with or without the cuts remains uncertain, leaving fans eager for updates on this highly anticipated film.
