Emergency: CBFC Removes ‘Saala’, Modifies ‘Iss Parivaar Ki Toh…’ Dialogue & Demands Other Major Cuts Amid Delayed Certification

Sep 1, 2024

As Emergency nears its release, controversy surrounds the Kangana Ranaut film. With just a week until its September 6 debut, the film faces criticism for allegedly misrepresenting the Sikh community. The Shiromani Akali Dal is calling for a ban, accusing the film of being objectionable.

Emergency Is Yet To Get CBFC Certificate Amid Ban Calls

The Punjab and Haryana High Court recently reviewed a case from Mohali residents Gurinder Singh and Jagmohan Singh. They argued that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) should revoke the film’s certification and have it reviewed by respected Sikh figures.

However, additional solicitor general Satya Pal Jain informed the court that the film’s certification is still pending. Jain said, “The certification of the movie is under consideration. It has not been granted as of now. It will be granted as per rules and regulations, as applicable in this case. If anyone has any grievance, the same can be sent to the board.”

CBFC Asks For Major Cuts To Kangana Ranaut Starrer, Film Has 146 Min Runtime

Bollywood Hungama has revealed the CBFC’s cut list for Emergency. The board asked for changes, including two voiceover disclaimers. It also required specific dialogue changes, like replacing “Iss parivaar ki toh…” with “Tum iss parivaar ke…” and muting “saala” in a sensitive context. References to “Mr President” were changed to “Rastrapati ji.”

The CBFC asked the filmmakers for explanations and evidence about various scenes. This included clarifications on the violence in the Bangladesh war scene and controversial dialogues attributed to US President Richard Nixon and Winston Churchill. The filmmakers provided detailed factual sources and permissions for content, including footage of Operation Blue Star.

Directed by Kangana Ranaut, Emergency runs for 146 minutes, or 2 hours and 26 minutes.
