Kangana Ranaut’s latest film Emergency is embroiled in controversy, creating a stir both online and offline. The film, which stars Ranaut as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has faced significant hurdles with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

A fake still circulated on social media recently suggested that Emergency had already received its CBFC certification. This misguiding image went viral on Reddit, with users accusing Ranaut of staging a drama. In response, Ranaut took to social media to dismiss the reports.

Kangana Ranaut CLARIFIES Emergency Hasn’t Released CBFC Certificate Due To Death Threats

In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), Ranaut addressed the situation, saying, “There are rumours that our film Emergency has got a censor certificate. It is not true. In fact, our film was cleared earlier but its certification has been stopped because of several threats.”

She revealed that both she and CBFC members have been receiving threats regarding the film’s content. Specifically, pressure is being applied to censor scenes related to Indira Gandhi’s assassination, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, and the Punjab riots.

Ranaut expressed her frustration, saying, “People of the censor board are also getting a lot of threats. There is pressure on us not to show the assassination of Mrs. Gandhi, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, and the Punjab riots. I don’t know what we will show then, that there is a blackout in the film. This is an unbelievable time for me and I am very sorry for this state of things in this country.”

Release Of Emergency Uncertain Amid Protests

The film’s release, originally set for September 6, is now uncertain. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has issued a legal notice to the CBFC, demanding that the film’s release be halted. The notice claims that the Emergency could incite communal tensions and misrepresent the Sikh community.

According to NDTV, the notice argues that the film’s portrayal is misleading and harmful to Punjab’s social fabric, suggesting that Ranaut’s intention is not to make a political statement but to target the Sikh community negatively.

The controversy has intensified, with Ranaut seeking police assistance amid rising objections from the Sikh community. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has reportedly assured community leaders that the state government will consider banning the film, pending legal advice.

Additionally, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), responsible for managing historical Gurdwaras, has sent a legal notice to the film’s producers, including Ranaut. The notice alleges that the film distorts Sikh history and offends the Sikh community.

The SGPC has demanded the removal of objectionable scenes from Emergency and an apology from the filmmakers. They also insist that the film’s trailer, released on August 14, be removed from all public and social media platforms.
