On this day 30 years ago, Hum Aapke Hain Koun hit the screens and changed Indian cinema forever. Released in 1994, this film, initially called a “wedding video,” quickly won over the public with its charm and became one of Bollywood’s most beloved classics.

Directed by Sooraj Barjatya, the film featured an ensemble cast, including Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Renuka Shahane, and Mohnish Bahl, whose careers soared to new heights after its release.

But the film’s success story isn’t just limited to its stars; it also brought fortune to many others, including cinema halls and even black ticket sellers.

During a special event held to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary, the team shared fascinating behind-the-scenes stories. The event took place at Mumbai’s iconic Liberty Cinema, the same venue where the film premiered in 1994.

At that time, Liberty was struggling, showing B-grade films and lacking basic amenities, including a proper ladies’ washroom. Sooraj Barjatya recalled that Metro Cinema, now known as Metro Inox, refused to screen the film.

That’s when Nazir Hoosein, the owner of Liberty, stepped in and welcomed them “with open arms,” agreeing to Rajshri Productions’ conditions to upgrade the theatre’s facilities, including installing the Ultra Stereo sound system.

The massive success of Hum Aapke Hain Koun breathed new life into Liberty Cinema. People from far and wide flocked to see the movie, making it a sensation.

Producer Kamal Kumar Barjatya revealed that the current booking window at Liberty remained closed for a full year because all shows were sold out in advance, including weekday screenings.

The film’s popularity even benefited black ticket sellers, with Sooraj Barjatya humorously recounting how one seller managed to buy two flats with the profits made from selling tickets in black.

The film’s team also took a moment to remember Nazir Hoosein, who passed away on May 12, 2019, along with other key figures from the production who are no longer with us. This included actors Ajit Vachani, Reema Lagoo, and Laxmikant Berde, choreographer Jay Borade, and producers Rajkumar Barjatya and Rajat A. Barjatya.

Hum Aapke Hain Koun remains a milestone in Bollywood history, remembered not just for its box office success but also for its cultural impact. Its legacy continues to influence Indian cinema, making it a timeless classic.
