Amid Entourage Cost Debate, Bollywood Makeup Artist Says Anurag Kashyap’s Heroine Wears Rs 250 Cotton Sarees: ‘She Wakes Up & Cries’
The debate over Bollywood’s entourage costs has sparked new reactions, with renowned makeup artist Shaan Muttathil weighing in. Recently, Anurag Kashyap criticised the high costs associated with celebrity entourages, labelling them as excessive and unnecessary.
Now, Muttathil, who has worked with stars like Jacqueline Fernandez and Rani Mukerji, has responded to Kashyap’s remarks.

In a recent podcast on the YouTube channel Phitte Muh With Sik & Jas, Shaan Muttathil addressed the ongoing controversy. He remarked that Kashyap’s films feature heroines in simple cotton sarees costing just Rs 250, which require minimal makeup. Muttathil pointed out that this type of film doesn’t necessitate the high-end makeup and hairstyling typical of big-budget productions.
Muttathil explained the role of celebrity makeup artists and the fees they charge. He explained that high fees are a reflection of their extensive experience and expertise.
According to Muttathil, just as a director with a successful track record commands a higher fee, makeup artists and hairstylists do as well. He suggested that Kashyap’s criticism might stem from a misunderstanding of the industry’s economics.

Muttathil also addressed the perception of jealousy towards makeup artists and hairstylists, who often earn more than other crew members like managers or first assistant directors. He emphasised that only a small number of artists command high fees, among the many working in Mumbai’s film industry.
The makeup artist took a specific aim at Kashyap’s films, noting that they typically feature modest settings and characters. “Of course, he can lose his s**t,” Muttathil said, referring to Kashyap’s frustration with high makeup costs.
He contrasted Kashyap’s approach with that of filmmakers like Karan Johar, who, according to Muttathil, understand the significance of professional makeup and hair services without disparaging them.

Anurag Kashyap is known for his distinctive filmmaking style, with notable works including Gangs of Wasseypur, Dev D, and No Smoking. Beyond directing, Kashyap has also made a mark as an actor in films such as AK vs AK and Maharaja.
Currently, he is working on an upcoming thriller featuring Bobby Deol, Sanya Malhotra, Saba Azad, and Joju George.
