The wait is over for fans eagerly anticipating the release of Bad Newz. Starring Vicky Kaushal, Triptii Dimri, and Ammy Virk, the film released in theatres today, July 19, 2024.
Bad Newz: Plot
Bad Newz centers on Akhil Chadha (Vicky Kaushal), a charismatic Punjabi man, and Saloni (Triptii Dimri), an ambitious chef. The story begins with their serendipitous meeting at a mutual friend’s wedding, where sparks fly instantly. Akhil’s infectious charm and Saloni’s independent spirit create a captivating dynamic, leading to a whirlwind romance and a seemingly rushed marriage.
Akhil’s traditional views and Saloni’s modern aspirations create tension, leading to their separation. As they navigate their new lives apart, Saloni meets Gurbir (Ammy Virk), a supportive boss and a friend who helps her rediscover herself. A crazy night and drunk sex with them both, Saloni finds herself being a one-in-a-billion case of heteropaternal superfecundation, and she ends up carrying twins having two biological fathers. Hell breaks loose and a comedy of errors unfolds with a series of bizarre events one after the other. Akhil and Gurbir must prove their worth to be the better father.
Bad Newz: Performances
Vicky Kaushal delivers a stellar performance as Akhil, effortlessly portraying his character’s charm, swag, persona and emotional depth. His ability to blend humor and sincerity makes his portrayal engaging and relatable. He effortless pulls off being loud and over-the-top, giving tough competition to Ranveer Singh’s Rocky Randhawa. Triptii Dimri’s chemistry with Vicky Kaushal is palpable, adding authenticity to their on-screen relationship. Ammy Virk provides a commendable performance as well, he is sweet, innocent, and naive as Gurbir. He isn’t loud funny, but impresses with his impeccable comic timing.
Bad Newz: Analysis
The screenplay of Bad Newz by Ishita Moitra and Tarun Dudeja offers a refreshing story. The dialogues are witty and the humor, while sometimes predictable, adds a lightheartedness to the film. The story balances romance and comedy effectively, although some subplots, like the pregnancy twist, could have been better integrated. The film is plagued by stereotypes, such as Punjabis loving rajma chawal, mumma’s boys being careless husbands, and women having to choose between career and marriage. These clichés feel outdated and detract from the overall experience. Despite these shortcomings, the makers have cleverly included some fabulous meta jokes that stand out, adding a layer of humor that is both witty and self-aware. The film is also peppered with numerous Bollywood references, which add a fun, nostalgic touch for fans of the industry
The screenplay of Bad Newz is smooth but the film often feels rushed, making it difficult for the narrative to settle and develop fully. The film’s pacing ensures that it remains entertaining throughout, despite a few predictable moments and stereotypes.
The soundtrack of Bad Newz is catchy and well-integrated into the story. The music’s upbeat and contemporary feel aligns well with the film’s youthful vibe.
Bad Newz: Verdict
Bad Newz is a delightful romantic comedy that benefits greatly from its lead actors’ performances and vibrant visual style. While the film has its share of predictable moments, the engaging narrative, catchy music, and heartfelt performances make it a worthwhile watch. It’s a fun, light-hearted film that successfully blends humor and romance, offering a refreshing take on love and relationships.
