As the film marks its glorious 22 years, Bhansali Productions celebrated with a nostalgic video featuring clips from the movie.

“The magic of Devdas lives on. Celebrating 22 years of love, friendship, and melodies that have become a part of our hearts. #22YearsOfDevdas #SanjayLeelaBhansali #Devdas @imsrk @aishwaryaraibachchan_arb @madhuridixitnene @apnabhidu #HindiCinema #Bollywood #IndianCinema #DevdasAnniversary,” read the caption.

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Devdas was released on July 12, 2002. It was one of the most expensive Indian films ever made at the time and became the highest-grossing Indian film of the year, achieving major commercial success.

More About Devdas

The film features Shah Rukh Khan in the titular role, with Aishwarya Rai as Paro and Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi. The cast also includes Jackie Shroff and Kirron Kher in significant roles. Devdas is a remake of the legendary actor Dilip Kumar’s film of the same name, and it is based on the 1917 novel by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay.

The storyline revolves around Devdas Mukherjee (played by Shah Rukh Khan), whose life spirals into despair after his family forbids him from marrying his childhood love, Paro. Heartbroken, Devdas turns to alcohol and seeks solace in the company of the courtesan Chandramukhi.

Apart from its powerful storyline, the film’s music has left an indelible mark on audiences. Songs like “Bairi Piya,” “Silsila Ye Chahat Ka,” and “Dola Re Dola” remain favourites even today. The film’s grandeur and opulence, combined with its emotional depth, have made it a subject of admiration and analysis in the cinematic world.

Kirron Kher and Jackie Shroff’s performances added depth to this already rich tapestry, and the film’s nomination for the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) further highlighted its global appeal.

While many filmmakers have revisited the Devdas narrative over the years, none have matched the scale and grandeur of Bhansali’s 2002 version.

Where To Watch It On OTT?

For those eager to relive the magic of Devdas, the film is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Jio Cinema.
